NEW YORK - Several state and local legislators are backing a proposal to recognize the Chinese Lunar New Year as a school holiday in New York City.

Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Ron Kim are sponsoring the bill, along with more than 20 co-sponsors. They say that one in every six of the city's public school students are Asian-American and celebrate the holiday.

In previous years, students who miss school on the start of the Lunar New Year receive an excused absence, with some schools seeing up to 80 percent absent on that day.

A Department of Education spokesperson says it's considering adding the holiday to the school calendar in the future.
