BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - A livery cab driver was fatally shot in his vehicle in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and the shooter remains on the loose, police say.

Police found an unconscious Naji Fawaz, 35, in the driver's seat of his cab on Decatur Street between Patchen Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard at around 12:30 a.m. Monday. He had multiple gunshot wounds to his neck and torso.

Fawaz was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A neighbor says she heard gunfire and then saw that Fawaz's silver car had run into the back of her parked car on the street.

Fawaz's family didn't want to speak on camera, but neighbors say the victim was originally from Yemen, and he had been in the area for a few years. He lived blocks from where he was killed.

Investigators may be looking for two suspects and believe that the shooting occurred during a robbery.

According to the Taxi and Limousine Commission, Fawaz had been a licensee since 2013.

New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesman Fernando Mateo released a statement that said in part, "We were very concerned that criminals won the battle over stop-and-frisk in New York City. This controversial program had a huge impact on saving lives while affecting some that claimed discrimination ... thugs with guns are not being stopped before they commit a crime."

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
