Local activist's niece shot in Bed-Stuy; expected to be OK

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - Police are searching for the gunman who wounded the niece of a community advocate in Bedford-Stuyvesant. According to activist Mike Tucker, his 18-year-old niece was shot Wednesday night near the Tompkins Houses. He says bystanders took her to Woodhull Hospital and that she is expected to recover. Tucker says the shooting hits close to home, especially after his son was fatally shot in 2005. He has since started the 'Lay Down the Guns' campaign. Tucker also says he and his family are hoping police will use nearby surveillance video to help find the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
