BROOKLYN - Stores across Brooklyn participated in the third annual Small Business Saturday today.

Many of the shops offered special deals to promote local businesses in the area.

"Small businesses really give neighborhood character," said Frances Caroll, owner of Silk Road Antiques on Atlantic Avenue. "I think that without them life would be pretty dull."

The event was started three years ago by American Express. Since then, it's been celebrated across the country on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
