BROOKLYN - A local advocacy group is trying to get speed demons in the borough to slow down in neighborhoods such as Greenpoint.

"Transportation Alternatives" is hoping to spread its message by using a public safety advertisement from New Zealand that dramatizes an interaction between two drivers moments before their vehicles collide.

Safety advocates say increased awareness will help cut down on accidents on busy roadways, such as the intersection of McGuinness Boulevard and Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint, where cars regularly drive by pedestrians at dangerous speeds.

Last month, a woman was struck and killed by a flatbed truck while riding her bike at the intersection.

"Transportation Alternatives" is urging city officials to impose a 20 mph speed limit on local streets, reinforcing the message the public service announcement drives home.
