BROOKLYN HEIGHTS - The merger that was supposed to save Long Island College Hospital from bankruptcy is now on the rocks.

A few months ago, Long Island College Hospital was saved from certain bankruptcy thanks to a proposed merger with SUNY Downstate.

Now, that merger is being delayed in Albany because the Department of Health says it wants to make sure the hospital will spend the grants for the merger wisely.

A spokesperson for Long Island College Hospital says if the money doesn't come in, the two won't be able to merge and the hospital will have to file for bankruptcy, causing thousands to lose their jobs.

Residents in the area say losing the hospital would be a huge blow to the community and the local economy.
