BROOKLYN - A backhoe clearing snow in Brighton Beach hit and killed a 73-year-old man on Oceana Drive West Monday.

Police told News 12 that a backhoe being used to clear the streets around the private Oceana condominiums was out clearing the snow just before noon. As the driver was backing up, he hit Stanislav Chernyshoy, who was crossing in the middle of the street.

Authorities say the victim had severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.

The driver was a private contractor, not a city worker. He remained on the scene as police investigated.
