BROOKLYN - A man was fatally shot by police after he allegedly attacked his common law wife with scissors in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.

According to investigators, a 38-year-old woman was found in the lobby of 60 Clarkson Ave. at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday with a stab wound to her upper chest and right shoulder area.

Authorities made their way up to a second-floor apartment where they found smoke coming from under the door. Once inside, they say a 39-year-old man lunged at them with scissors, forcing officers to open fire, hitting him in the head and torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unclear what led to the domestic dispute, and police have not yet released names, pending family notification. Neighbors report that the couple had recently moved into the building.

The woman remains in stable condition at Kings County Hospital. Two officers were also taken to the hospital for ringing in their ears.
