BROOKLYN - Dozens of people in Fort Greene today were forced to evacuate their homes due to explosions in a manhole and a subsequent fire.

The FDNY says explosions in a manhole occurred near the corner of Myrtle and Washington avenues, which led to an electrical fire in the basement of 459 Myrtle Ave.

About 30 people on the block had to evacuate their homes from a total of seven buildings.

Con Edison crews have shut off power in the area and checked for carbon monoxide. Authorities have not yet said when tenants will be allowed back into their homes.

The Red Cross is on site to help residents who were displaced by the explosions and fire.
