Manhole fire in Midwood left many without power

MIDWOOD - Firefighters were called out this afternoon to extinguish a manhole fire that caused numerous power outages.

Firefighters say the manhole at Coney Island Avenue and Avenue K erupted in flames. They say firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but the fire left power out for many.

Con Edison crews were called in the restore the power.

Officials say the fire was likely caused by increased power usage from air conditioners because of the extreme heat.
