Marathon officials start painting blue line

NEW YORK - (AP) - Sixty-five gallons of blue paint.

That's what it'll take to apply a blue line charting the 26-mileroute of Sunday's New York City Marathon. The line will be followedby about 43,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 100countries.

City officials and race organizers held a news conferenceyesterday at the Central Park finish line to discuss the race. Thenthey picked up paint rollers to symbolically start the job on thepavement.

The real work on the 4-inch-wide blue line begins this evening.

City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan says her department also is making sure the runners encounter"a smooth road" - not the potholes her department is constantlyfilling.
