EAST NEW YORK - An East New York man who has been taking care of a community garden for more than two decades says police have locked up the space and kicked him out.

City officials say they found marijuana growing in the garden on two different occasions.

James McCrae says he transformed a junk-filled lot into a green oasis 23 years ago. The city shut it down two weeks ago and seized McCrae's license to operate.

McCrae says he's not responsible for putting the plants there and claims the issue was resolved 18 months ago.

Community members have voiced support for McCrae and the garden. They've asked officials to reconsider.

McCrae's lawyer says he's confident that his client didn't violate any rules.

Officials say they will meet on the issue in the future.
