SUNSET PARK - A legendary rock may have resurfaced in Sunset Park, and is causing quite a stir in the neighborhood.

According to the legend, the Martense Lane Rock came to Sunset Park thousands of years ago when a Dutch slave had a fight with a stranger on what was once Martense Lane in Brooklyn. The tale ends with the stranger being defeated and, in anger, he stomped down on a rock and left a big foot print, revealing he was the devil.

Sunset Park residents familiar with the story say a rock recently uncovered outside a church has an indentation that could be a footprint.

Currently, the rock has been placed on grass outside a Green-Wood Cemetery gate. A cemetery spokesperson told News 12 they are working with Community Board 7 to find a different home for the rock, due to a safety hazard.
