BROOKLYN HEIGHTS - Thanks to volunteers at Masbia Food Kitchen today, residents of Brooklyn Heights started off the Jewish New Year with a helping hand.

More than 1,000 pounds of food was given out to the less fortunate and to single mothers throughout the day in order to celebrate the beginning of Rosh Hashanah.

The holiday is a time to celebrate the creation of the Earth and to reflect upon one?s own life.

Among the food given out was chicken, apples, oranges, carrots, and sweet potatoes. In hope for a ?sweet year,? jars of honey were also distributed.
