Mayor de Blasio announces streamlining of special education reimbursements

MANHATTAN - Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of the state Assembly announced today that they are making several changes to help parents struggling to educate children with special needs.

The city is streamlining the process for families who are entitled to reimbursement for special education programs.

Some parents have to send their children to private institutions in cases where there is not a suitable public option for the child's specific need, and the city has to reimburse them.

Mayor de Blasio says the process has been cumbersome in the past. He has promised to speed up the process by having the Department of Education settle cases within 15 days.

The changes go into effect this September.
