BROOKLYN - A new revelation from Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio's daughter is shining a light on something many young people suffer from.

Chiara de Blasio, 19, released a YouTube video on Christmas Eve revealing she has battled depression and substance abuse. She says that when she went to college, she attended class, but alternated between drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Chiara says she needed help and was referred to a treatment center by her therapist.

Mayor-elect de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray called their daughter courageous and said she possesses wisdom and maturity far beyond her years.

Chiara says she is now sober and was able to help in her father's mayoral campaign.
