BROOKLYN - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is touting the success of the city's outer borough taxi program, which began in August.

Approximately 6,000 taxi licenses for the bright apple green cars known as Boro Taxis have now been authorized, with 1,200 of them earmarked for wheelchair-accessible vehicles only. The city hopes to eventually issue 18,000 licenses over the next three years.

The mayor says the cabs have dramatically increased the number of legal street hails available to residents living outside of Manhattan, making more than 300,000 trips as of Nov. 12.
