THE BRONX - Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the results of a new investigation that shows thousands of criminals are getting their hands on illegal guns online.

Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, conducted an investigation of Armslist.com between February and May of this year, and found that people can avoid background checks simply by turning to the Internet.

The mayor is once again calling on Congress to close the loophole. He also wants the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms to improve the enforcement of existing laws, like documenting when guns recovered from crimes were originally sold online.

Additionally, Bloomberg said websites should adopt tougher protocols to deter crime, such as flagging suspicious behavior.
