Mele charged with murder, manslaughter in Garza case

BROOKLYN - The Orange County District Attorney announced an indictment today in the Laura Garza murder case.

Officials say Michael Mele is the prime suspect in the disappearance and death of the Brooklyn resident in Dec. 2008.

Garza's remains were found in April in a field in Pennsylvania.

Mele, a convicted sex offender, has been in prison on a parole violation and was scheduled to be released on Christmas Eve.

He is charged with murder in the second degree, manslaughter in the first and second degree and tampering with physical evidence stemming from Garza's death.
