THE BRONX - Melissa Mark-Viverito has been sworn in as the new city council speaker. 

She is the first Latina to become council speaker in New York City. 

During her inauguration ceremony, speakers and attendees alike were energized and spoke about the progressive change they hope she can bring to the city. 

To symbolically show that all boroughs and people of the city will be considered by the city council, Mark-Viverito was sworn in on the 1898 New York City charter which unified all five boroughs.
