NEW YORK - (AP) - New York City fire officials say a Brooklynblaze has killed an 8-year-old boy and injured five other children.

A fire department spokesman say the fire in a two-family,three-story home on Avenue P was brought under control just before11 p.m. Wednesday.

He says the 8-year-old was pronounced dead and a 1-year-old isin respiratory distress and is in critical but stable condition atConey Island Hospital

He says four other children were taken to Staten IslandUniversity Hospital's Burn Center. One is in serious condition andthree are in stable condition. Their ages were not immediatelyknown.

The cause of the fire, which started on the third floor, wasunknown. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries.
