Mom who lost son in Homecrest fire dies from injuries

HOMECREST - The mother of a young boy who died Monday in a Brooklyn fire has succumbed to her injures, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Fire officials say the victim, 25-year-old Samily Chan, was living in an illegal basement apartment at 2252 E. 15th St. in the Homecrest section. Chan's son, Ivan Liu, was killed in the blaze and another 2-year-old relative and an uncle are in critical condition, officials say.

State Sen. Carl Kruger is calling for the landlord, Xiao Ping, to face manslaughter charges. Kruger argues Ping should be held accountable for failing to install emergency exits or even smoke detectors.Community leaders are considering setting up a relief fund for the family. Funeral arrangements are underway.
