More than 20 tenants forced out after building fire

BROOKLYN - More than 20 tenants at 109 East 96th St. have been forced out of their homes after the fire department issued a partial vacate order.

Tenants say a small fire began in the basement last week. After fire officials inspected the building, they issued a partial vacate order asking several tenants to leave due to safety concerns.

The Department of Buildings says the order was given for illegal conversions in the building.
