MANHATTAN - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board met this morning to vote on initiating a series of public hearings on proposed cost-cutting measures.

During the meeting, union workers, community leaders and politicians took to the podium to blast the MTA board members, who they say are out of touch with the plight of local commuters.

One of the most controversial cuts that are on the table affects the popular unlimited monthly and seven-day MetroCards. The MTA will possibly cap the number of rides or increase the fares.

The measure will be debated in public hearings and then put to a vote in October.

Meanwhile, the MTA has approved the layoffs of 202 station agents.
