NEW YORK - (AP) - About half of the more than 4,000 securitycameras installed along New York City's subways are not working.

At the same time, the cash-strapped Metropolitan TransportationAuthority has cut the number of some weekend police patrols onmajor bridges and tunnels.

Critics say the non-working cameras are a blind spot in thecrime and terrorism safety net for the nation's largest city.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the MTA needs more funding. But hesays Albany lawmakers turned down a plan that would've eliminatedmost of the agency's problems.

MTA officials say safety of riders is the top priority. Theypoint out that about half of the cameras do work and about 900 morewill work by June.

Overall, crime is down in the subways, even as ridershipincreases.
