BROOKLYN - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to lay off more than 550 bus drivers and subway workers.

A report in the New York Times says the layoffs will coincide with the elimination of several bus lines and subway routes. The MTA has already announced a layoff of 500 station agents.

The agency says the cuts are needed to close its $800 million shortfall.
