NEW YORK - A severe stomach bug spreading across the country has reached New York City.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been five reported cases of cyclosporiasis in the city, which is an intestinal infection caused by parasites that are spread when food or water is contaminated with feces.

The first case was in Iowa, and is believed to have come from a pre-packaged salad mix in Nebraska. Those states have had the worst outbreaks with more than 370 people falling ill and 21 ending up in the hospital.

The Food and Drug Administration says the salad mix is no longer in the food production chain, and it's still trying to figure out where the bug originated from.

Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, loss of appetite and nausea.

The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but the best way to protect against it is to wash your hands and all produce before eating.
