BROOKLYN - Police are investigating a disturbing act of vandalism that was committed over the weekend at a local Jewish cemetery.

Nearly 200 gravestones were smashed, knocked over or vandalized at Washington Cemetery on Bay Parkway, security there says.

Security guards say the cemetery is typically closed on Saturdays for the Jewish holiday and they believe the massive destruction may have occurred sometime Saturday night.

Many of the tombstones were nearly two centuries old and some of them marked the resting place of Holocaust survivors, officials say.
