BROOKLYN - Empowering young girls through mind, body and spirit was the theme today at a Bay Ridge all-girls elementary school.

Physical education teacher Laurie Cahill introduced a new kickboxing class at Visitation Academy in an effort to teach the girls how to protect themselves, as well as learning practical skills and boosting self-esteem.

Each week, the girls have been learning new moves and have already mastered breaking wooden boards with their front snap kicks.

Parents have also had a chance to catch a glimpse of the students' progress and say they are happy with the new class.
