BROOKLYN - Transit advocates launched an effort Wednesday to overhaul what they call an underperforming bus system in the Big Apple.

The New York City Bus Turnaround Campaign calls for extensive changes to how MTA buses operate.

In a new report, the campaign says bus ridership over the past 13 years has declined. In the same time, population and subway use have skyrocketed.

The group blamed the disparity on an inadequate bus infrastructure and recommended improvements like redesigning, simplifying and shortening bus routes.

Activists also called for a so-called tap-and-go pay system so riders can enter or exit through all of the doors to make stops go faster.

The MTA says it is already taking some of the measures the group has called for. It has an internal system to assess gaps in service and says riders can expect a new payment system in 2018.
