New York City mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio, Joe Lhota meet for final debate

NEW YORK - New York City's mayoral candidates went head-to-head Wednesday night for one last televised debate.

Democrat Bill de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota did find some common ground in paying tribute to the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Both are supporting Mayor Michael Bloomberg's $20 billion storm resiliency plan, but it was one of the only things they could agree on.

The candidates spent the majority of the 90-minute debate disagreeing on everything else from charter schools to public safety.

Front runner de Blasio says it's time to alleviate tension between the NYPD and minority community. Lhota, who served as MTA chairman under Bloomberg and deputy mayor under Rudolph Giuliani, says the city will see a spike in crime if de Blasio takes over.

The debate was one of Lhota's last chances to sway voters. De Blasio has held on to a commanding lead in all recent polls.

Voters will make the final decision on Election Day this coming Tuesday, Nov. 5.
