GREENPOINT - A recent state report shows that a Greenpoint creek contains hazardous chemicals; a discovery not surprising to local residents.

The New York State Department of Health has issued a warning against full-body immersion in Newtown Creek due to chemical contaminants that are also affecting the local fish population. The state has advised against eating fish caught in the creek.

The state is planning meetings with the public to discuss the health assessment findings later this month.

Newtown Creek winds from the East River to Maspeth Creek in Queens through mostly industrial areas.
