GREENPOINT - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is prohibiting kayakers from using Newtown Creek in Greenpoint because of possible safety hazards in the water.

In a statement, the agency said "the N.Y. State Department of Health is conducting a study on the safety of the water in Newtown Creek. Until the study is done, we are closing public kayak access at the nature walk at Newtown Creek."

Many kayakers suspect the EPA has only taken action on Newtown Creek because it has been designated a Superfund site, which requires an environmental cleanup.
