BROOKLYN - U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg has passed away at age 89.

His office says the nation's oldest senator and the last remaining World War II veteran serving in the Senate died Monday morning at a New York hospital due to complications from viral pneumonia. Lautenberg was first elected to the Senate in 1982.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will appoint a successor.
