FORT GREENE - A four-story building collapse destroyed a bar and left six families without a place to live Sunday afternoon, but no one was seriously hurt.

It happened on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene when bricks began to fall off just before 2 p.m. followed by the rest of the building, which now sits in rubble.

"We knew this building for some reason wasn't safe," says Jose Nunez, a neighbor of the building.

According to the fire department, no one was inside the building when it collapsed. Only minor injuries were reported. The falling debris damaged some neighboring businesses as well.

City inspectors are now investigating the cause of the collapse. Fire officials say the entire block has been evacuated while the city's buildings department checks the structural integrity of surrounding buildings.
