BROOKLYN - A nonprofit group has joined the team of developers planning to transform the Bedford-Union Armory project.

The Local Development Corporation of Crown Heights says its mission for years has been providing affordable, low-income housing.

The project would transform the armory into a sprawling, mixed-use complex with commercial space, recreational facilities and a mix of low-income, affordable and market-rate housing.

The plan has been heavily criticized, with activists rallying multiple times against it. They argue that it would further gentrify an already changing neighborhood. They fear that the the so-called affordable housing is not actually affordable for people currently living in the area.

Critics say the nonprofit's addition does not solve fundamental problems. They want to scrap the plan altogether and start over without a private developer that would only build low-income housing.
