DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN - Brooklyn high school students will look their best on prom night this year, thanks to local nonprofit Operation Prom, which hosted an event Saturday at the Urban Assembly Institute.

The school's gym was filled with dresses, shoes and handbags, all donated to Operation Prom, which is dedicated to helping low-income teens attend school dances without the financial stress.

"The cost of prom is just so expensive right now and we don't want any girl to feel that they can't go to their prom because of economics," says Dawn Simon, of Operation Prom.

The nonprofit says this is the first year it has hosted a dress giveaway in Brooklyn, and 500 gowns were donated for the cause.
