NY budget debate may have cost workers' paychecks

ALBANY - (AP) - New York's lawmakers, already bombarded withcriticism over a state budget nearly three months late, have missedanother deadline that could cost thousands of state workers theirpaychecks on Wednesday.

Word of the deadline to adopt a bill, get it signed by thegovernor, and certified by the Division of Budget circulatedthrough the Capitol Monday afternoon.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said if the latest emergencyspending bill wasn't passed by 5 p.m., some of the 153,000 stateworkers due to be paid Wednesday likely wouldn't get paid until atleast Thursday. It passed after 5.

The $270 million payroll appropriation was part of the latestemergency spending bill while the budget remains under negotiation.
