NY jury convicts 2 in JFK Airport tank-blast plot

NEW YORK - (AP) - Two men accused of plotting to blow up jet fueltanks at New York's JFK Airport have been convicted of conspiracycharges.

A federal jury reached the verdict Monday in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors had accused Russell Defreitas and Abdul Kadir ofscheming to cause a massive explosion by igniting the tanks. Theysaid Defreitas, a former cargo handler, hatched the plot to avengethe perceived U.S. oppression of Muslims.

Kadir was charged with trying to arrange financing for the plot.

He's a former member of Guyana's parliament.

The defense had argued that the men were led astray by aninformant. Kadir testified that he was against attacking innocentvictims.

Kadir was convicted of five charges, but acquitted ofsurveillance of mass transportation.
