RED HOOK - The Department of Transportation is planning to invest millions of dollars in Red Hook to increase street safety.

The DOT presented its proposal to Brooklyn's Community Board Six Thursday.

The $5.2 million plan will repair streets like Beard and Ferris near the Valentino Pier.

It includes installing new bike lanes, leveling streets and safer sidewalks. The plan will also try to boost the area's flood mitigation infrastructure -- Beard and Ferris streets were both hit especially hard by Superstorm Sandy.

The DOT says the improvements will benefit pedestrians and drivers.
