BROOKLYN - New York City drivers protested the looming toll hikes on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Monday by paying the current $10 toll in pennies.

The rally was organized by a Staten Island artist who says drivers know their penny paying protest won?t impact toll hikes, but they need some way to vent about the rising cost.

Toll collectors typically do not accept pennies from drivers. The one-way toll across the Verrazano-Narrows from Brooklyn to Staten Island will increase to $11 July 12.

AP wires contributed to this report.
