NYC officials: Have emergency kits ready

BROOKLYN - As Hurricane Irene barrels up the East Coast, city officials are urging residents to brace for the worst.

The city's Office of Emergency Management is advising people to prepare "go bags" stocked with essentials in the event of an emergency. Residents are urged to pack non-perishable canned foods, flashlights, batteries, personal hygiene products and water.

Forecasters say Hurricane Irene will most likely hit New York Saturday evening into Sunday.
