NYC officials tout city as safest

NEW YORK - (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is touting New York Cityas the safest big city in America based on the FBI's preliminarycrime statistics.

Bloomberg on Monday says the report shows that crime decreasedby 5.1 percent in New York City in 2009, outpacing national trends.

Of the 25 largest cities in the country, New York recorded thelowest index crime. Of the 263 U.S. cities with populations largerthan 100,000, New York's crime rate ranked 245th, placing itbetween Garden Grove, California and Sunnyvale, California.

The FBI collected the crime data from more than 13,000 lawenforcement agencies around the country. It cautions againstdrawing conclusions from the data.

The NYPD is the nation's largest police department with about35,000 officers.
