BROOKLYN - The NYPD is taking more steps to crack down on city smartphone thefts with Operation ID.

The department is holding free events for residents to register their portable electronic devices in case they get stolen.

Upcoming registrations will be held in Brooklyn this week at Kingsborough Community College, Saint Francis College and New York Tech College.

To register electronic mobile devices:
Feb. 7 - Kingsborough Community College, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Feb. 7 - St. Francis College, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Feb. 7 - NY Tech College, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Feb. 8 - Coney Island Train Station (Coney Island Ave.), 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Feb. 8 - Sheepshead Bay High School, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
