NYPD: New York City park crime spiked in 2013

Crimes in parks have increased by 18 percent in 31 of the city's biggest parks. (3/12/14)

PROSPECT PARK - Crime is on the decline throughout New York City, but new data shows that there's an increase of crime in parks.

Crimes in parks have increased by 18 percent in 31 of the city's biggest parks. 

According to NYPD records, 417 major felony crimes happened last year in the parks compared to 354 in 2012. In Prospect Park, there were eight major crimes during the last quarter of the year, including robbery and rape.

A spokesperson for the Parks Department said it has doubled park patrols and continues to work closely with the NYPD to ensure park safety.
