NEW YORK - The NYPD says rape complaints are up drastically across the city so far this year.
The latest data released by the NYPD reveals that Brooklyn has the highest number of reported rapes in the city so far this year with 97 cases.
The number of reported cases citywide also jumped by 24 percent compared to this time last year.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says he believes the crime is still being underreported. He says the NYPD has been encouraging more victims to come forward and in the meantime it has made some changes in the department when dealing with rape victims.
Members of the NYPD Special Victims Unit also say they're adding more detectives to combat the rise in violence.
