MILL BASIN - The Empire State Building was lit up blue Wednesday in honor of the fallen NYPD Officer Randolph Holder, a third-generation police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday.

The suspect accused of firing the shot that killed Officer Holder remains in jail Thursday.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says the 33-year-old officer lost his life to someone who is a career criminal.

Investigators say the suspect, 30-year-old Tyrone Howard, has a lengthy arrest record and was wanted in another shooting when he encountered police Tuesday night.

Police say Howard opened fire on Officer Holder during a chase, after stealing a bike Tuesday night.
Howard is charged with first-degree murder and robbery, and is being held without bail.

Officer Holder was originally from Guyana, but lived in Brooklyn. Family and friends of Officer Holder say he was a great and caring man.

Officer Holder's landlord, Keith Corbett, says he was a great guy who was always helping out. He says he was shocked when he got the call that his tenant and friend was dead.

Authorities say he made 125 arrests throughout his career and was awarded six departmental citations for his work.

The viewing for Officer Holder is Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Greater Allen A.M.E Cathedral of New York in Jamaica, Queens. His funeral is set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the same location.
