THE BRONX - The NYPD says it is doubling its efforts to make sure people stay safe during the snowfall this weekend.

The NYPD brought News 12 into its warehouse at Floyd Bennett Field, where it stores all the city's water rescue equipment.

The equipment – which included rafts, wetsuits and emergency rescue trucks – is expected to be used during cases of extreme flooding.

In the past, only emergency service unit squads were sent to rescue situations. This year, local precincts have been provided with equipment and training so that they can help people in need on the streets of the neighborhoods they serve.

NYPD officials say the lessons of Superstorm Sandy have shaped the new way police respond during emergency situations.
