NYPD under fire after targeted Muslim-surveillance claim

BROOKLYN - NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly was grilled at a hearing at City Hall yesterday after it leaked that the department's intelligence unit allegedly targeted Muslim neighborhoods for surveillance.

According to the Associated Press, the NYPD subjected entire Muslim neighborhoods in various areas throughout New York City to surveillance, sometimes solely based on ethnicity.

Some Muslims residents say they're uncomfortable with the idea that they may be being watched simply because of their background.

Kelly, however, says that the surveillance on the communities is warranted based on leads, not on ethnicity.
