WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Barack Obama has begun his second term in office after both an official and a ceremonial swearing-in.

The president took the oath of office and gave his inaugural address in front of several hundred thousand people on the west lawn outside the Capitol.

The first swearing-in of the second term was held in a private, small ceremony Sunday because of a Constitutional mandate that requires the Commander in Chief to start his term on Jan. 20. By long-standing tradition, when that day falls on a Sunday, another public ceremony is held the next day.

Vice President Joe Biden was also sworn in for a second term for a second day in a row. Bronx native and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor administered the oath to Biden both times.

The Obama family took part in the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue following the swearing-in.
